The Seven Deadly Sins:GLUTTONY by dahlig The Seven Deadly Sins:GLUTTONY by dahlig
Ah, it's been a long while, hasn't it :) I have a new cast for my right wrist which allows me to paint, so here is the next from the Sins :)

GLUTTONY is an inordinate desire to consume more than that which one requires.

Why didn't I draw anything disgusting? Well, I wanted to prove myself I can keep to the original "idea" of a glutton, WHILE making the character aesthetic, pretty and (in her way) attractive. I wanted to prove the modern "pretty=thin to the bone" standard wrong. ;)

Some symbolic explanations:
Abundance of textiles - I treat this sin not only as eating and drinking, but consuming in it's wider meaning, such as buying and gathering useless things etc
Grapes - "luxury" goods, connected with lavish parties (in ancient times) etc
The pink colour theme - reminds me of grapes, sweets etc :)

I hope you like this one, as it was definitely the hardest one to balance and get "right".

Sorry blackeri for messing up the comment space... Guess we'd better keep this discussion elsewhere....

Sorry :(

I have nothing to complain 'bout the artwork, except for that I liked it's prequels better... 10/10 though, good work!

But I'm not really comfortable with people calling certain values "wrong"... Whilst it sure as hell isn't healthy being too skinny (like the opposite aswell), you're perfectly able to find that attractive. There is no such thing as a wrong value (please forgive me if I misused the word value, hopefully I got my message across anyway :) )...

Note that I'm not arguing against `blackeri's choice too make the character aesthetic instead of disgusting.

On the note of values, gluttony has it's negative side effects, as does't the other sins. This is why they are the infamous seven sins. To value any of these is not healthy. Whether being overwieght is attractive is a whole nother issue.

I guess that came out wrong.. I didnt mean that skinny people cant be pretty its just... hmm... iono. Sometimes pretty seems to automatically MEAN skinny which.. seems completely wrong to me. If you get me ^^; (I'm not that great at explaining stuff... gomen! ^^;)

I understand what you're saying. What you meant by "pretty=thin to the bone is wrong" is that one who is thin could be pretty or ugly, and it is the same with a bigger person. Beauty is not limited to one specific body type although the media would have us all believe that no one can be beautiful unless they are bone-thin.

I know. I already tried to explain that what I said came out wrong. x__x There is nothing wrong with being skinny; it's just it's wrong to think only "skinny" or "thin" people can be pretty. (in my opinion.)

And yes, the dress is beautiful :)

I have the same problem! D:
People think I'm anorexic because I eat so much and barely gain any weight.
Seriously.
I'm what- 90 lbs? I'm 13 PEOPLE!
13!!!
My friends can lift me into the air.
There all like, "Wow you're light."

Atleast in swedish it's called anorectic ;) ......... Well, I guess if you're only attracted to skinny people, then who's to say that is wrong? Since environment probably has even more to do with our sense of what is beautiful than nature has, people are kinda bound to think alike... And at the moment, for most people skinny is the thing to be, I can't see no harm if you're able to keep it at a sane level. Sadly enough too many girls overdo it :( . But if you believe the only acceptable standard is the healthy, then the girl in this piece isn't really the best example either.

But why decide to make these "deadly sins" beautiful, if they're "deadly?"
If the point is to show their effects on the soul (presumably, that you'd go to "hell"), then why paint them attractively?
If the point is to show how tantalizing they are, then it makes sense.
But I don't understand how painting "Gluttony", that is, capturing the feel of gluttony and the "sin" of consuming, is captured by a voluptuous, healthy looking woman eating healthy little grapes. She's curvaceous and wearing pink. I think it's off the mark. Most of the other ones had a lot more concept behind them, this one feels weak.

What nonsense!  These 'Seven Deadly Sin' pieces are brilliant, and dahlig is spot-on in making all of the 'sinners' beautiful women, including 'Gluttony' (who says curvy, well-fed women can't be physically beautiful?).

You seem to be associating sinfulness with ugliness which is very close-minded of you.  Like you say, it's the soul that is being degraded, so why would a malign soul affect a person's physical appearance?  Perhaps you've been watching too many early Disney animated films (i.e. Cinderella and the 'Ugly Stepsisters').

I agree with you except for of her being a "healthy looking woman". It is certainly not healthy to be overweight, but I guess other than that she is healthy. I don't understand why a sin should be beautiful. If you ask me she should be eating something mucky that's smeared on her dress and face. Now THERE'S a deadly sin, don't you think?

"I think he portrayed it well. While the seven deadly sins are deadly, they're also temptations. We've all been gluttonous, envious, wrathful, vain, etc. in our lives. It's too easy to be drawn into selfish temptations like this.
Hence why it makes sense to make the sins seem pleasing, to portray how easily you can be suckered into them. =)"

Doesn't that explain, honey? Well said, Tannonclaw ^^

That's a very great point you know. But I still think they could show it for what they look like to to other people not just ourselves. Of course, that's just what I think. :)

Thats rather well-said too. But that would be from a vituous point of view, as evil and disgusting. But no human could possibly be as pure to think of the deadly sins in such a way, because sometimes we give into them.

i kind of agree. instead of grapes you could have done candy or some other unhealthy food. don't get me wrong, i love the piece, it is absolutely amazing! however i think gluttony would have been better captured with candy or ice cream or cookies.

Well, I think she hits the mark. The "deadly sins" are beautiful because sin is supposely beautiful and beauty is deadly in its own ways. Also, "Gluttony" in a way is the over consumption of anything, grapes were royal and grapes were only meant for those who could afford it, too much of a good thing can be deadly and sinful.

People would complain either way, "Gluttony" could always be the overloading of shopping, not being able to control yourself.

Um, the sins in this series ALL look healthy, so if the portrayal the artist intended is aesthetic, why should Gluttony be any different?

I don't agree. I think this gluttony, and all the others, suit perfect for their roles.. Especially the gluttony...

Anyway, great picture, love it.

(Random fact that you already know, I bet: The seven deadly sins (and virtues) were created by the catholic church to scare every one into paying them for indulgences and such... Though we never hear of the seven virtues, do we? I suppose they didn't go into the plans... )

Actually, the seven vices and seven virtues were painted sometime before the renaissaunce (I know I spelled that wrong) in a church somewhere (gah I forget the name). The Vices that were painted were different, though. Arrrgh! I wish I could remember who painted them and where.

Ok, I agree that grapes may seem a bit strange of a food to showcase, but the idea goes back to gluttony being "overconsuming" and "excessive." When they show the excessivly rich dude indulging in his wealth, he's shown being feed grapes and being fanned..... That's where the idea stems from....

And, Sweetie, that girl is overweight. And overweight (excessive weight) is not healthy. It can be attractive. It can be cute. But it is not healthy.

I am overweight. I do not like being overweight. I think I'm hot. I think I'm smexy. But I am African-American, and being Black plus being overweight equals most medical problems that exist today. Lust is deadly because AIDS kills. Wrath is deadly by defintion. Pride WILL kill a nigga (and by nigga I mean "dumbass.") We don't even HAVE to talk about Theology or "hell." Most women who shop too much, get into debt. Most women who eat too much, blow up. Most women who fight too much, don't keep friends. OVERconsuming is a deadly, deadly sin.

i applaude you on this statement! you have hit the mark so well. i too am overwieght but i always get compliments on how pretty i am(so not bragging...) being beautiful is left to the eyes of the beholder. most ppl think skinny ppl are extremely attractive and some think those ppl are gross.
but, everyone is beautiful in their own way!!!

I think it hits the mark. When I think of gluttony these are the types of things I think of. And I do believe the artist is painting them so beautiful almost as a statement to how enticing the seven deadly sins are. Is that not why they are so deadly?

Wonderful point. The seven deadly sins are supposed to look seductive so as to draw people in, otherwise the seven deadly sins are powerless to conquer people.
