The Seven Deadly Sins:GLUTTONY by dahlig The Seven Deadly Sins:GLUTTONY by dahlig
Ah, it's been a long while, hasn't it :) I have a new cast for my right wrist which allows me to paint, so here is the next from the Sins :)

GLUTTONY is an inordinate desire to consume more than that which one requires.

Why didn't I draw anything disgusting? Well, I wanted to prove myself I can keep to the original "idea" of a glutton, WHILE making the character aesthetic, pretty and (in her way) attractive. I wanted to prove the modern "pretty=thin to the bone" standard wrong. ;)

Some symbolic explanations:
Abundance of textiles - I treat this sin not only as eating and drinking, but consuming in it's wider meaning, such as buying and gathering useless things etc
Grapes - "luxury" goods, connected with lavish parties (in ancient times) etc
The pink colour theme - reminds me of grapes, sweets etc :)

I hope you like this one, as it was definitely the hardest one to balance and get "right".

I like your use of sybolism, and I also like how instead of cakes and or some other sweet you chose grapes like they would have portrade it in ancient times.

I am positive that the artist didn't chose woman as a sin, but simply as a theme.
Seriously, you guys see wrong in every goddamn corner... This looks like Tumblr.

You are an amazing artist and have immense talent, but I just wonder why you chose to depict gluttony as a woman who looks average weight or even slightly thin. I could understand if you posted a woman who is thin because that would be sending the message that even thin people can be "gluttons." I also sort of understand if you depicted a significantly overweight woman because at least that would be an actual person who is heavy. But I feel as though by contrasting her healthy weight with the others tells people that if you're this body weight, that means you're fat. I'm not saying that other sins are underweight or unhealthy, just that you may be portraying the average woman as too heavy to be healthy.

Otherwise, I love your work, and I hope you continue making beautiful art.

I love how you put this picture together. I found it interesting when you explained why you made her attractive. I personally figured that you did that to symbolize how tempting these sins can be. If you did make her ugly, the sin wouldn't seem as intriguing. I also like how you made the point that 'thin' doesn't necessarily mean pretty. beautiful piece, and i love the rest of the series!!

I agree with you on the idea that you have to be skin and bone to be pretty. That is wrong. My mom's not skinny but she is ery beautiful.

I think you did a wonderful job balancing this one and I appreciate your view to the "beauty = stick figure" debate. If girls were meant to be that thin, then they wouldn't have curves to begin with!

I like that you went with an attractive image of gluttony instead of a grotesque one--first, because it's nice to see modern society's skeletal norms of beauty challenged, and second, I think it helps to get across the idea of sin as attractive--if sin didn't appear attractive on the surface, it wouldn't be difficult to resist.

This is beautiful. Your artwork is incredible. If I may make one suggestion to this drawing, though...I am really not trying to sound like I am criticising your work in a bad way, so please don't take this the wrong way. I know I am guilty of this problem a lot in my artwork, but she looks a tad stiff. The color scheme and the grapes are a good idea, but maybe add in a few emptied bottles of wine and having her relax back onto some super fluffy pillows with grapes in one hand and a bottle of wine in the other to really give that gluttonous feel. Once again, please do not take this as me being condescending or anything, I wish I could draw half as wonderful as you! lol

Well, that's not the idea it's supposed to be conveyed. Epicurism isn't a "sin" because it's more in the quality that the quantity, and gluttony refers to a waste of ressources and a terrible lack of tastes.

Now being the big man I am, I can see WHY I would love this picture...MORE is always been a thing for me...I always have to have the biggest and most of everything...Love the plus sized model and the rose pink dress...Kind of reminds me of Ms. Piggy if she were a human being instead of a puppet...How is it that you can make Gluttony so DAMN sexy?...Love the grapes spilling everywhere too...Beautiful...Just Beautiful!

For once I would like to see the alleged "sins" of the christian bible portrayed in a way that does not epitomize them. Beautiful women practicing arts of self deceit and eroticism have nearly no meaning on such topics. The "alleged" sins may themselves be alluring, but often times their practitioners are a far cry from such. I myself find this piece lacking in realism. If only every gluttonous wench were so well endowed. Likewise for the opposite sex. Very few look upon a man with a belly that sticks out so far he can't see his toes and find it attractive. My apologies to any this may offend. I merely speak my opinion, as all are wont and welcome to.

So glad you didn't make her "disgusting" because the other 6 "sin's" you captured the beauty of "WOMAN" and they were ALL individually and differently beautiful from each other...as it should be! Great job!
